Alexis said, "Mommy loves Daddy (so true, so true), us (again, correct) and her friends (yep!).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To which Shane sat straight up and with a shocked look on his face said to me, "YOU have friends??"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I guess to him, age 5, there is nothing beyond my husband and children that matters at all in this world.  In many ways, he is right.  Before I am a friend to others, I must be a wife and mom! We spent 5 days in class, getting certified to teach two different curriculums, "Seven Habits of Highly Effective Families" and "Couples Communication."  All I can say is: Awesome.  Not only are we prepared to teach these dynamic programs to others ... but we learned so much to apply to our own family!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For each class, we were given lots of "take homes" ... books, workbooks and other aids for presentation. But what I took home was a new understanding of how to communicate in my house in a way that respects all involved, allows everyone to feel "heard" ... and keeps the volume at normal!  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've already tried out my new skills and wanted to share some results ...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On Sunday morning, I told Shane (5 years old) to get dressed.  He told me he wasn't ready, so I said, "Okay, but soon, because we have to leave ..." (My parents were here for the week while Greg and I were gone and we needed to get them to the airport.)  A bit later, I called him upstairs and told him to get dressed.  Again, "no."  I started to get frustrated at his obvious disobedience.  Again, I asked him to get dressed, and again, "no..."  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Okay, here's where it gets good!  Instead of getting really upset and demanding that he obey me, I took the time to look at his little face.  He was biting his lip to hold back the tears.   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I sat down in his big, red Pottery Barn chair and pulled him into my lap.  "Shane, are you refusing to get dressed because you don't want to take mee maw and paw paw to the airport?"  Big tears welled up.  He shook his head yes.  I sat and held him for a minute.  I told him I didn't want them to go either.  After lots of hugs, I asked Shane to get dressed.  He got up ... and quickly obeyed.  VICTORY!  And not just because Shane didn't spend the day in his PJs ... but because I know he felt heard, comforted and loved ... and I got several minutes with my 5 year old cuddled in my lap!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today ... it happened again.  I gave my girls the opportunity to be heard and make their own decision about attending AWANAs after talking it through with me.  It was peaceful and organized.  No yelling.  No tears.  No stomping around.  On the way to AWANAs, with a car full of happy kids, I decided to share with them how proud I was of how the situation at home was handled.  I told them I was thankful the Lord was showing me how to communicate more effectively ... and how well they had done in response, including making a wonderful decision.  The girls were smiling from ear to ear, they were proud, too!  I ended with, "God is really good ..."  Lexi chimed in with , "Yes, and He makes good plans ..."  To which Shane added, " ... except for that bird over there."  We laughed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, that is my "take home."  And it really is nice! We used to sing this song, "Good morning, Lord, this is your day, I am your child, show me your way!"  It's sweet and catchy ... and I find myself singing it often. Makes me happy. Reminds me of where my focus should be, and that Jesus holds my day in HIS capable hands. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I NEED this reminder as all the "stuff" of life swirls around! Even today, we're working extra hard to finish up our homeschooling for the semester ... we've got doctor's appointments for the kids ... I have some writing to do this afternoon ... we're headed to San Diego tomorrow for the weekend (Sea World, here we come!) ... and yesterday, we finalized our plans for an East Coast visit to our families, in THREE WEEKS!  Oh yeah, and I missed the registration day for Kindergarten, so that's got to get done QUICKLY. So, I'm ending this blog and getting to WORK ... with a song in my heart -- God is in control!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Soon, I'm planning to blog about Greg's work here ... New title ... new inspiration, right! Goodness, that is what I am hoping. I write blogs in my brain all the time. ALL THE TIME. Finding the time to actually translate them from the "brain blog" to this one, well that's where I run into trouble. But, I'm turning over a new leaf, hence a new title!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And, for all practical purposes, it TOTALLY makes sense!  It's a PUN that describes my life to a "T."  First of all, Philippians 4:11 is quite meaningful for me. It says, &lt;em&gt;"... for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:" &lt;/em&gt;(NKJV) This is my prayer! It's Greg's life verse, and honestly, he's really good at it. Contentment comes naturally to him. Not so much for me. I crave change ... then, I freak out when it actually comes! So, contentment is my daily prayer. And God is incredibly faithful. So, why is contentment so important in my life these days ...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, (second part of the pun), we've lived in a lot of STATES lately! Five years ago, when we joined the army, we lived in Gaffney, SC. Kids and I moved to Richmond Hill, GA while Greg moved (for a few months) to Columbia, SC. We stayed in GA while he went to Afghanistan for 15 months. Then, we ALL moved to Stuttgart, Germany for 2 1/2 years. Now, we're settled in the sandy desert, Fort Irwin, CA. All the circumstantial stuff that comes with moving ... well, that's why I pray for contentment! (And honestly, past contentment, I pray for JOY, JOY, JOY)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, welcome to my new blog, "Whatever State I'm in," based on Phil. 4:11 and our nomadic life. I couldn't even remember my blog address at first when I tried to sign in. Ugh! Many apologies. Since I last blogged ... well, we MOVED from Stuttgart, Germany to Fort Irwin, CA.  I started homeschooling Ashley and Lexi.  Greg started a somewhat CRAZY new position as a Chaplain trainer.  I started doing a little writing "on the side" ... and well, life has just kept me too busy to blog!  But, I seriously want to TRY to get back into this.  So many things have happened that I would like to share.  So ... I think I'm going to truly START OVER.  Even been thinking of a new name for my "new and improved" blog.  So ... in the next few days, everything is going to CHANGE. Change is good, right? "Over the Hill." Thing is, I don't feel old at all! In fact, at 40, I'm feeling pretty good.  Might have something to do with the incredible SURPRISE birthday party my husband threw for me. Or maybe it has to do with my little guy curling up in bed with me on Sept 2 and whispering, "Happy Birthday, Mommy" in my ear. It might just be the birthday lunch with my girlfriends ... or the offer of a friend to watch our kids so Greg and I could have a quiet dinner together.  Honestly, it's a combination of all of the above ... plus a couple of other things I've been thinking about over the last few days.  Here's why I'm happy to be 40 ...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today, I am overwhelmingly more in love with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! He continues to use me (WOW) and fill me with the desire to serve Him.  I have more of an understanding of forgiveness, mercy and grace than I did before. I now know that it is not about me and what I do for Him ... but it's all about HIM and how He works through me and changes me to be more like Him that counts.  I know the relationship I have with HIM is only going to get better. I'm excited about that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am infinitely more confident in my marriage and assured of Greg's love for me and his commitment to our home and family than ever before. I met Greg when I was 26. And thankfully, in the last 14 years, he's rubbed off on me a lot! While we have much in common, the ways in which we are different were perfectly God designed.  Greg is calm and cool in crisis. Never worries. He's an optimist, always.  He has a vision and a plan. We've become quite a team. We're both aware of the fact that marriage takes work -- and willing to do what it takes. Didn't think I could love him more when we married, but I do. So blessed to daily be a part of what God is doing in his life and equally blessed that Greg is a part of what God is doing in me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And a few other things ....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm past a lot of the insecurities of my twenties and thirties. Happy to be me. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Done with late night feedings, diaper changing and potty training!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've laughed at myself so much over the years that it pretty much comes naturally. Thankful God has given me a good sense of humor, especially about my own shortcomings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've learned the power of being semi-organized, keeping a budget, living within your means ... and at the same time, how to be spontaneous enough to put all of that aside for some fun with family and friends.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oh my, I could go on and on, but I've also learned, in my 40 years, not to write a BOOK every time I blog -- so my friends and family don't get bored!  Anyway, Happy Birthday to me, and may the next 40 be as great!!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(The picture is one from my party ... So much swirling around up there! And to be truly honest, I must further admit, I've felt anxious and worried. Yuck. Double yuck. So much change on the horizon for us.  A move back to the States ... a new job for my hubby that entails significant time away from us ... a decision to homeschool my girls beginning in January ... and even more "junk" I won't even take the time to go in to! Then, to top it off, I hurt my knee.  I don't know what I did and I don't even know exactly when I did it. What I do know is my running is being seriouly affected, and it is making me mad!  I've had to really cut back -- and this week, I'm actually taking some days off.  I even made an appointment with the physical therapy clinic here to see what in the world is going on ....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But enough about that.  All to say, it's been a weird few days in my head.  This morning, I woke up and said, "Enough is enough!"  I sat down with my Bible and got serious about kicking the thoughts of doubt, fear, frustration, etc to the CURB.  Thankfully, God remains an ever faithful constant in my life.  No doubt He's just waited patiently for me to run to Him and lay my burdens at the Cross!  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I quickly opened my Bible to Philippians 4:8.  This is a verse I know well. In fact, a few months ago, I helped my girls memorize it.  However, I needed to read it again. And write it down ... again.  &lt;em&gt;Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy -- think about such things ... and the God of Peace will be with you.&lt;/em&gt; I then turned to Matthew.  Read some more in Philippians (God promises us the SAME power He used to raise His Son from the grave, WOW).  Thank you, Lord, for pouring truth into my life!  For helping me move beyond myself to understand the hope, peace and strength you have available for me!  Today, I'm focusing on true, noble, right, pure and lovely thoughts ... and trusting HIM for resurrection power to face each new day. Although we don't have official orders, we've been asked and accepted a job at one of the Army's National Training Centers ... in the middle of the Mojave desert!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Greg will be involved in training Chaplains as they prepare to deploy to Afghanistan.  Sounds like a totally cool position for him ... and totally different than what we've been doing for the past two years here in Germany. But, we're excited about the possibilities.  Never have lived in the desert before! My goal lately is to push myself harder, get fit -- and not remain satisfied with the thought, "Oh, ran my 2 miles this morning, I'm good to go."  I've been running on the treadmill for months now, but it is SUPER hard to push myself on the treadmill.  Yes, I can adjust my time, run some sprints, even add some incline.  However, it is SOOOO boring.  And lately, with no AC in the house and rising temps outside, it is SUPER hot!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, I'm moving outside, where in the early morning or late evening -- there is a BREEZE. Yes, have to deal with the serious inclines around here -- but that is good conditioning, right!  And when I'm running outside, my pace is quicker and I don't notice the passing of time.  It paid off this morning.  I ran the "RB loop" and when I got back to the base, I felt so good that I ran it again!  I know there are people who run faster than me.  Yes, there are people who run farther. But I was pretty proud of my 5 miles today!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Seems like the older I get, the more I love a good challenge.  Maybe I just want to prove to myself that I've still "got it" ... or maybe I love the adrenilin rush of an accomplished goal.  I also love that I am teaching my kids to believe they can do whatever they set their minds to do.  "I can't" just won't work in this house!  Mostly, I am grateful to the Lord for giving me the ability to use my legs ... push myself ... and enjoy a quiet, early morning run in beautiful Stuttgart, Germany!  Thanks, Lord.  We did it! (I'm hoping to be ready to participate with several friends in a half-marathon in October if all works out schedule-wise ... We've had an amazing couple of months!  A trip to Paris ... school is over ... a fun day at Sensapolis for Ashley's birthday ... lots of neighborhood fun ... and I never even blogged on Father's Day -- even though I am filled with gratitude for the amazing Fathers in my life.  My dad, father-in-law and hubby deserved a Father's Day post!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, it's been tough for me to write lately.  I think it is because we were living in "limbo land" for a few months.  On March 31, got word that we would be moved this summer.  And that was it.  Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months. And still no word on when, where, how, etc.  It was frustrating!  While we waited, we made no plans for the summer and backed out of some of our "commitments" for the fall (I gave up my much-loved role on the PWOC board ... but thankfully, God made it clear that the wonderful woman He picked as my replacement is TRULY the woman for the job. I'm blessed to "pass the torch" to Sherry!) And just waited.  Now, don't get me wrong ... we didn't STOP! Our ministry has continued moving forward.  But even still, we waited.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A week and a half ago, we found out that we will be moved in December.  Without formal orders, we are still unsure of the "where" part.  But at least now we know something more concrete.  And it is much easier to know we have a few months to tie up loose ends.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, I'm going to "backtrack" and blog about life since March 31 over the next few days. I remember the panic I felt when my firstborn choked on a Cheerio ... and equal amounts of panic when she dropped to the ground for her first full-blown temper tantrum!  And I won't even talk about the trauma of potty training (I think I FINALLY got it straight, the 3rd time around!)  Anyway, on top of all of the tremendous blessing and joy of having children, it's tough work.  So, today, while my precious family cooks lunch for me ... I must take a minute to thank two special moms in my life: Carolyn Schneider and Lynn McVey.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To my mother:  I have a feeling that as I recant my mothering nightmares, you must smile just a bit.  In the midst of sharing godly wisdom, you have to be thinking "ah, payback!"  All teasing aside, I am grateful to you for so many reasons. I certainly learned how to "act like a lady" from you ... clean like a maniac ... wash clothes ... cook a meal, etc.  But more importantly, I learned much about godly character, how to be obedient to the Lord (even when it's REALLY hard), and how to diligently serve others from you. You modeled what it means to trust the Lord, faithfully study His Word and willingly share it with others. I'm eternally grateful to you for helping me become the woman, wife and mother God wants me to be (yes, this is an ongoing process.)  And of course, I must also mention that you are a GREAT grandmother.  I'm thankful for all the ways you have taught our children what it means to love Jesus and follow Him.  Today, even though I am thousands of miles away from you, I want you to know that I love you and Praise the Lord that you are my mother.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To my Mother-in-Law: Much of who Greg is today is due to your persitence and commitment to raising a godly family.  And I know you had to put up with a lot! Even now, with Greg grown and gone from your house, I know we are daily thought about and prayed for by you.  So while Greg thanks you (he did publicly in church this morning), I thank you as well.  I'm really glad to be a part of your family and honored that you have always treated me with kindness and love.  I don't think all daughters-in-law have it as great as I do! I truly believe you've made my job as a mommy easier by helping so much with the children when we are together.  (Plus, Greg is an EXCELLENT help around the house ... and has always said I have you to thank for that!)  We love you so much and thank the Lord for your continued influence in our lives and in the lives of our children, too. In this life of chaos the Lord has called us to, I am thankful for the consistency and stability you and Sam offer to us. (Yep, we look like dorks, but what fun!!!)  It was a spring day, my favorite time of year in Germany (really, anywhere) and with a friend watching Shane, it was AWESOME to have some time alone together ... even if we were gasping for breath and pedaling furiously uphill most of the time!!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As we rode along, I started thinking about the fact that it doesn't really feel like we're getting older.  In fact, when it comes to Greg and me -- it really just feels like we keep getting BETTER!  Honestly, after 11 years of marriage, we're more in love than the day we married (even though we thought that wasn't possible at the time).  We're more comfortable with one another and more assured of the strength of our bond (or maybe its that we are more assured of God's faithfulness to be our strength when we are weak!) Its a great place to be and I imagine it will continue to get better as the years pass by.  Not a bad thought at all!  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Truth is: even if I could, I wouldn't go back to the early days of our marriage.  I like where we are now!  It has more to do with my own growth and maturing than with Gregs (Even though I LOVE what God has done in his life ... and he gets better looking by the day!!!!).  I dealt with some pretty hefty insecurities in my mid to late 20s. Today, I'm more secure in the Lord and with myself.  I am aware of what God has done to turn around my ability to over-analyze EVERYTHING, worry needlessly and probably drive my husband crazy!  I'm thankful for the calm I usually feel (ok, Greg, maybe NOT at 6 am in the RyanAir terminal when 3 children are crying and our passports didn't get stamped appropriately ...).  I have learned NOT to place unfair expectations on Greg.  I continue to learn to place my hope, trust, self-worth, future, etc in the Hands of the All-capable Father, instead of burdening my husband with the "job" of fulfilling my every need.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, all to say, I'm enjoying growing older ... especially with my amazing husband at my side ... and 3 great kids, who make me smile and laugh every day. I'm truly blessed and thankful for the life we have together, the ministry HE has given us and the opportunities ahead.  (You guys remind me of this when the big 4-0 rolls around a few months from now.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oh, and, by the way, our bike ride was invigorating but short-lived the other day.  My gears and tires were not co-operating.  Eventually, we gave up and enjoyed lunch overlooking the vineyards. AMAZING!!!!!!  Thanks, Greg, for a wonderful date lunch! After much searching (hours and hours and hours trying to coordinate flights with places to stay, car rentals, things to do, etc, etc, etc), we decided to go to Alicante, Spain.  And what a GREAT decision it was! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our vacation began early in the morning on April 11.  We left Stuttgart at 6:30, with very sleepy kids, to make our 9:20 RyanAir flight from Karlsruhe.  RyanAir was an experience in itself!  It is a low cost airline, with NO frills.  We stood in the cold waiting to board the plane. There was no assigned seating, no free drink or food service and no in-flight movies!  But, everything went great. Our flight was smooth.  And we had only paid 11 euro per ticket to Spain (well, with some taxes and fees on top of that.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During the week, we enjoyed the very "beachy" feel of Costa Blanca.  Although the weather didn't cooperate the way we hoped it would (it was quite windy and cloudy) We walked on the beach ... played in the sand ... and enjoyed the sunshine (well, when it would finally appear).  We went to Terra Mitica, a theme park and Terra Natura, a zoo.  We also found some great play areas for the kids. And of course, we ate some great food.  Our first big meal was at Tony Romas, one of our favorite bbq rib places in the States. It was so yummy!  I think the highlight of the week was a restaurant we found at the end of the week, La Neuvo Alcazar.  Food was amazing and we enjoyed talking with the owner of the restaurant. Ashley, Lexi and Shane spent most of the evening in front of the lobster tank.  Unfortunately, those guys were probably dinner for someone later in the evening.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One thing we found very interesting about Spain was the schedule for meals.  They eat breakfast late in the morning. Lunch is not until 2 or 3.  Dinner is after 8 pm in the evening!  Made it difficult for us to find open restaurants when our kids were ready to eat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think the highlight of the week for me was the fact that we rested.  It was not a vacation where we drove for miles to see a castle or take a tour.  We didn't do any sight-seeing at all. We mostly stayed close to home and took our time getting ready and getting out of the house every day.  The kids loved where we were staying, so they were content to play in the backyard or watch movies while Greg and I drank coffee on the balcony off of the Master Bedroom in the mornings.  We sat on the beach while the kids played in the sand.  We had lots of opportunities to talk while they hit the playground or play area we had found.  It was just what we needed!  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yesterday, April 16, we got up while it was still dark to make our way to the airport in Alicante to head home.  Our flight took off at 6:30 and we were back in Stuttgart and on the way back to Robinson Barracks by 10!  Although we were all tired from our early morning travels, we all agreed it was a GREAT vacation.  Shane was ready to go back to Spain before the day was even over. I'll post pictures soon!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;** by the way, our week was full of laughs! While at Terra Mitica, we were taking a boat tour around the park.  At one point, we saw two Sea Gulls resting on some rocks.  No big deal. Well, not to us. But Shane couldn't stop watching them.  One was standing up, the other was sitting (is that how you say it????)  Anyway, after staring those birds down for a few minutes, Shane turned to me and pointing at the bird that was sitting, said, "That one is broken." Sometimes, I'm tired. And yes, frustration occurs.  But when I look at my children, I can't believe how much God has blessed me!  Every single day my kids give me a reason to smile ... and laugh out loud. It's amazing to watch Ashley, Alexis and Shane grow and develop their own unique personalities and gifts.  They might look alike ... but they are so different in so many ways.  Today, I just thank the Lord for my kids and for giving Greg and me the opportunity to raise them. Can't believe I am just now sitting down to do our yearly "State of the Family" Christmas letter.  Truly, life offers many challenges.  For me, finding time to do anything other than family, ministry and life in Germany in general is an overwhelming task!!! However, I know many of our family and friends pray for us ... and want to know what is going on with us.  So, for you, I put together a summary of our 2009.  I'll post some pics of the family too!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*** Greg is loving his job here!  More like civilian pastoring than he has done in the past.  He is the community chaplain for an all-housing post, so our ministry here is very family-focused.  And it is awesome.  The chapel has experienced unprecedented growth this year.  We have a full (and amazing, I might add) Praise team and band.  Children's church. Sunday school for all ages.  Men's fellowship.  Wednesday night small groups. The already established ladies' Bible study group has grown, too and is really the "backbone" of all the ministry that takes place here.  Greg also spends a great deal of time counseling one-on-one or for couples.  As you can tell, he stays BUSY.  He also spends time at the gym daily (another good place to connect with people, while getting fit!!!) and has enjoyed doing some traveling this past year (more about that in a minute!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*** For me, days consist of the normal "mommy" stuff and lots of ladies ministry stuff!  Taught two Bible studies this past year ... and served as the "Titus 2 Advisor" on our PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel) board. Took on a new challenge this past summer as the Director for the Crocodile Dock VBS.  Along with continued part-time writing, being available for ladies here on post, working out and struggling through 3rd grade math, life stays pretty busy!  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*** Kids are doing great ... and growing fast!  Ashley is in 3rd grade.  She enjoyed playing soccer this past year and learning some German.  In August, Greg had the opportunity to baptize her, a real highlight for both of us!  Alexis is in 1st grade.  She loves to ride her bike and scooter.  Playing outside is truly her "thing."  Shane, 3, brings a lot of joy to all of us.  He became quite a "prayer warrior" over the summer.  Loves to pray!  I think we might have another "preacher boy" in the making in our house.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*** We were blessed to see some of Europe this year.  Our spring break trip to Italy (Florence, Venice and Sienna) was amazing.  Thought nothing could be more beautiful, until we camped with several friends in Jungfrau, Switzerland.  Breathtaking.  We also spent time in Strasbourg, France.  We've also seen lots of Germany, including a couple of stays in the German Alps (we even took a cable car to the top of the highest mountain in Germany!)  We've got a list a mile long of all the places we still want to see.  The history and beauty of Europe has captivated all of us.  Just so thankful for the opportunity the Lord has given us to see the world!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*** In May of 2009, Greg headed back to the States for a conference at Saddleback Church in California.  The trip gave him the opportunity to learn a great deal ... and meet the family of his Chaplain assistant who passed away in late 2008.  He also got to go SHOPPING (not of his own accord ... I sent him with a LIST).  Then, in July, we all headed home to spend time with our families. It was a perfect trip and many wonderful memories were made.  Worth every hour spent on the plane to and from! Shortly before Thanksgiving, Greg's parents were with us for two weeks.  At Christmas, my parents came.  So incredible for us to share our life here with our wonderful parents ... who have so faithfully prayed for us and supported the sometimes crazy path the Lord has placed us on.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thanks so much for continuing to keep in touch with us through email, facebook messages and blog notes.  We are so blessed to have an amazing network of family and friends across the United States who care about us and lift us up in prayer.  Please know we are happy and content doing the Lord's work here. My in-laws will be here in a few days (yippeee!!!), and I have a list a mile long of things that need to be done.  I cleaned the pantry earlier today. And that's where it stopped.  Instead, I:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Enjoyed a hot shower. I think I deserved it ... I ran in the cold rain this morning and finished up at the gym with my friend, Theressa who is helping me get back in shape (a huge task, I might add)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Played with Shane. Always a must, in every day. He's usually a lot of fun.  Today, he is a bit tired and cranky, so our play time hasn't been great.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Watched a Christmas video. Shane needed a break, so he picked last year's Christmas Spectacular from Thomas Road to watch.  Interesting choice for a 3 year old.  We enjoyed it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Answered email. Lots of it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Checked out Anntaylorloft.com. Just 'cause. (Didn't buy anything, thanks to Finanical Peace University, I rarely part with a dollar these days.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ate lunch with my sweety. Greg came home for lunch. It was great! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, I am anticipating the arrival of my girls -- and our afternoon/evening routine will begin. One of the greatest benefits of attending Christian school while growing up is that I learned a lot of scripture. At the time, I'm sure I didn't appreciate it. It was more homework. I remember times in High School when I would leave that verse (or passage) to the very last minute, cramming it in last thing Thursday night or even before school on Friday morning. But let me tell you ... God's Word is living and active!  I REMEMBER those verses.  Throughout my life, I have had the blessing of recalling scripture when I need it most.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, Greg and I want to pass this gift along to our children.  Because we are SUPER busy all the time, we've looked for some help in this area -- and we found it!  On Sunday evenings, all 3 attend AWANAS at the local International Baptist Church.  And they are ALL learning verses weekly. We try to familiarize ourselves with the verses on Monday and then review daily. On Sunday afternoon, we kick it into high gear and make sure Ashley, Lexi and Shane are ready to recite the verses to their leaders. And I've decided to memorize the verses along with them. Ashley thinks it is cool that I learned 4 verses in one week (I had to admit, it was all reveiw for me), but I also told her she will be doing the same thing as she continues to get better at memory work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of all the things we fill our brains with on a daily basis, this is by far the most important! I encourage you to help your children hide God's precious Word in their hearts ... and to memorize scripture yourself. Here is my weak attempt to explain ... we've been so busy (couple of trips, school and Bible Study started, we MOVED, we've been SICK).  Plus, we lost our internet the first week of September and only got it back this past Monday.  I had a few opportunities to check email, but never really had the time to blog.  So, I'M SORRY!  Here's a brief update on our lives and what we've been up to:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Travels:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A most amazing several days was spent in Jungfrau, Switzerland!  We camped with several families from our church.  Hiked gorgeous paths leading to breathtaking waterfalls ... ate great food around the campfire ... enjoyed wonderful conversation -- and lots of laughs -- with our friends. It was a GREAT time!  Our kids got to experience freezing weather in a tent, but they rebounded during the day when the sun would finally peak out from behind the mountains.  I will post pics -- and must say, Switzerland has moved to #1 on "My Favorite Place to Visit" list! Have to mention, the night we arrived it was POURING down rain. We pitched our tent and prepared dinner on the grill in rainy, cold weather -- and we didn't pack up and leave!!!! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last week we returned to Garmisch, Germany (in the German Alps) to the Edelweiss Hotel.  Greg had training classes during the day, so the kids and me headed out on our own!  We walked into town one day and did some window shopping (and ate at McDonalds).  Another day, we drove to Linderhof Castle (a nice trip up a mountain road ... Ashley was GREEN!)  Again, I will post pictures.  I love how my girls love listening to the tour guides and are learning so much!  We enjoyed the inside of the castle (Lexi especially loved the bedroom with the HUGE bed, all of the blue velvet bed coverings, and the 1/2 ton chandelier.)  The gardens outside were very beautiful, too and we enjoyed our picnic lunch.  Edelweiss has a great pool and hot tub,so we spent some time there.  The HIGHLIGHT of our trip was the cable car ride to the top of the Zugspitze -- the highest mountain peak in Germany.  Have to admit, while trying to help my kids not to panic, I felt a little afraid myself as we climbed higher and higher.  Near the top, It looked like we were headed straight into the rocky face of the mountain!  At the top, however, it was AMAZING! We spent some time in Germany, then crossed over into Austria.  We also sat in a little restaurant overlooking the clouds. It was awesome to drink hot chocolate and eat pretzels while sitting in the sky!  The trip back down didn't feel as scary ... except for the fact that they stuffed us like sardines into the cable car!  So glad we had the experience!  Something the kids will (hopefully) never forget.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ok, this has turned into a mini-novel, so I'll stop for now and post some pics.  Will be back SOON to update some more. By the looks of my posts, you would think we had a quiet, uneventful summer after our trip to the States ... but that is SOOOOO not the case!  We've been super busy.  Here's a few highlights:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Crocodile Dock.  VBS went GREAT at RB. Directing VBS was a new challenge for me and has kept me on my toes since May. But August 3-7 was AWESOME!  We had amazing community support ... with nearly 60 volunteers ministering to 74 children.  It was especially great to see so many dads come out and pitch in (this is why we chose to do it in the evening!).  What a blessing for the kids!  We prayed with LOTS of kids to recieve Christ ... and baptized two of them on the Sunday after VBS. Tiring, YES!  Worth every minute? YES, YES, YES. We give God ALL the glory for this huge success.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strasbourg, France.  Last weekend, we headed out for an overnight adventure in Strasbourg, about 1 1/2 hours from Stuttgart. Loved the sights of this quaint area in France. Notre Dame Cathedral was a highlight for me.  The kids loved the boat tour and mini-train ride through the streets of this old and historic city.  Of course, we ate some good food!  Still amazes me that we have been given this awesome opportunity to see the world ... and introduce our children to it.  Next trip:  camping trip in Jungfrau, Switerland.  Can't wait!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last but certainly not least, Greg was able to baptize Ashley on Sunday, August 9.  Such an emotional experience for us ... and a privilege beyond words for Greg!  She was one of eight baptized that night.  Ashley accepted Christ on Mother's Day, 2007, while her daddy was in Afghanistan.  What an honor for me to pray a salvation prayer with my little girl!  At that time, we decided she would wait for her daddy to baptize her.  To see her publicly declare her relationship with Jesus Christ was awesome for us.   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fall holds much in store!  We're looking forward to a couple of trips, a visit from Greg's parents, a leadership appreciation banquet for our chapel congregation and lots more growth at our chapel services. I took Alexis, Shane and a couple of kids from our church to the bowling alley.  Nothing special about that (except we had a really good time!) ... until I stepped outside to get reception on my cell phone to call Greg.  I noticed an MP (Military Police) at the end of the road stopping traffic.  Before I even had a chance to investigate what was going on, I heard this tremendous sound and looked up to see a Chinook landing in the field right across the street from where I was standing!!!  I was trying to leave a message on Greg's cell phone ... but it was so loud I couldn't even hear myself talking and my hair felt like it was going to blow off my head!  It was pretty exciting.  A crowd was starting to gather outside the bowling alley (including my wide-eyed son) as two Blackhawk helicopters landed beside the Chinook. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, why this made such a great impression on me is hard to understand.  I mean, I guess it is not every day that those kind of planes land across the street from the family-friendly bowling alley.  But I think it has something to do with the fact that this is how my husband traveled for more than a year of his life ... kind of in the same way you and I jump in the car!  He never stayed at his "home base" for more than a couple of weeks at a time before he would be off again, flying around Afghanistan to different smaller bases to minister to soldiers.  And he had lots of really interesting experiences while flying, including "going down" in a Chinook that had some mechanical problems (thankfully, they landed in the sand, no one was hurt -- not even a scratch) ... flying through tremendous rain and wind storms ... and times when the gunner in the plane had to do his thing in defense of our country and this war against terror.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, while I watched these massive machines reach the ground, I guess I was just struck with the reality of what continues on in Afghanistan ... and the fact that my husband was a part of it.  I was instantly grateful to the Lord for HIS protection over Greg's life.  No matter how big and strong those "war planes" are ...  GOD is bigger and stronger!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pretty cool day at the bowling alley, huh???  Made up for the fact that I had to share all of my bowling turns with my 3 year old ... he probably did better than I would have done anyway!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(The pictures were an aftersight ... just to prove what I saw!!!  Wish I could have snapped a pic when those big ol' things were still in the air coming down. I'm sure this blog could turn into a mini-novel, so I'm going to do my best to keep it short.  The flight from Stuttgart was mostly uneventful.  The only problem: it was LONG!  After the 11 hour flight, more than 4 hour layover in Atlanta, and another hour flight to Lynchburg, VA ... the kids were a mess!  Thankfully, it was 11:00 pm when we got to the hotel, so everyone went right to sleep.  The rest of our time there was spent with family (my sister, Cami and her family) and friends (the "gang" from our days at Falwell Ministries).  We loved every minute!  Greg especially loved his Father's Day lunch at the local BBQ restaurant.  The kids loved time with cousins Claire and Ella McBride and we ALL enjoyed Cold Stone Creamery!!!  Greg and I love Lynchburg, it is place filled with great memories for both of us. We were glad Greg's job took us there for a few days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After Lynchburg, we headed to the mountains of Asheville, NC to the Scenic Wolf Resort to stay a week with my family.  What a blast!!!  There was a great pool for the kids and the house was perfect for just sitting around and talking (and eating, of course!)  A highlight of our week was dinner at "The Fiddlin' Pig" ... food was good, company was GREAT -- but it was AWESOME when the dancers pulled my Alexis and Collyn's Addysn onto the dance floor, they were so cute!!!  Then, Ashley, Ava, Alivia and Shane got their chance to dance, too.  It is priceless to see the cousins playing together and getting to know each other.  My family has always been -- and will always be -- incredibly special to me. Our time together was amazing.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We stayed in Asheville at Collyn and Billy's house a few extra days to meet with my wonderful friend Jennifer Ramsey from our Fort Stewart/Richmond Hill days.  She and I literally  pulled one another through the deployments of our husbands (we did it by LAUGHING ... A LOT!).  Our children are the best of friends ... and it was such a blessing for us to get to see them this summer!!!!  We had a great few days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ended our trip in WV with the McVeys.  Couldn't have asked for a better ending ... except that it made it REALLY hard for all of us to leave!  Greg, his brother Dustin and I spent a day "in the trees" on a brand new zipline -- what a blast!  The girls and I had great shopping day with Nanny and Aunt Kim ... and we enjoyed lots of trips to the Ansted Dairy King.  The Fourth of July picnic with Greg's family gave him the opportunity to see many family members who we hadn't seen since before his deployment to Afghanistan.  And Greg was able to share with his home church about our ministry and his time in the war zone.  What a special time for us!  I could go on and on!  Oh!  I forgot to mention about our "date day" ... when Greg's parents watched the kids for several hours so Greg and I could spend a day together.  Amazing.  We went out to eat (Olive Garden, yum), to Target (like Heaven!), to see a movie, and ended it all off with ice cream from Maggie Moos (do you all sense a theme of our trip -- the McVeys love ice cream!)  It was a great day for Greg and me ... uninterrupted hours to talk, laugh and enjoy each other -- THANKS NANNY AND GRANDDAD! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our return trip to Stuttgart was tough.  Flew from Charleston, WV to Atlanta ... where our 4 hour layover turned into 6.  Then, 9 hours on the plane to Stuttgart.  Unfortunately, no one was able to sleep a whole lot.  And we're still feeling the affects of jetlag.  But it was worth it!  We loved every minute of our trip and are incredibly grateful to both of our families for making it possible for us to spend time with them this summer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Side note: While in the States, our church family in Gaffney, SC experienced a horrible tragedy.  One of our precious members was gunned down in her home along with her daughter.  Our hearts and prayers go out to our friends who are undoubtedly still dealing with this senseless loss.  Thankfully, Ms. Hazel Linder is in Heaven with Jesus! Thursday was the last day of school for our kids ... and boy, did we party!!!  The moms in the "neighborhood" got together and planned a celebration cookout, complete with hot dogs and ice cream ... and water games ... and kick ball.  Of course, the weather did not cooperate.  It was REALLY windy and in-between bursts of sunshine, the sky would darken and the rain would fall.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But that didn't stop this group of dedicated moms!  Greg opened the Chapel Annex for us and we moved our party inside.  It was a lot of fun.  Living on post is a new experience for us.  And it is great!  The kids have made lots of great friends -- and there is never a lack of kids to play with.  I'm also thankful for a group of really creative and fun moms ... they love to plan a good party!  In fact, we had ANOTHER cook-out Friday night, to say goodbye to a couple of families moving back to the States, a birthday party at the craft center on Saturday -- and another birthday party at the bowling alley tonight. It had just opened under new management ... and not a soul on the new staff speaks a word of English.  We ordered Schnitzel for Shane and Donor Kebaps (kind of like a gyro) for the rest of us.  When Greg's plate came out, it was covered in a large salad, pile of french fries and meat ... which we were expecting to be inside of some type of bread.  Mine was.  Ashley's was.  Lexi's was. But not Greg's.  So, he tried to explain.  The waitress was clueless.  But the cook came out (no, we were not making a scene ... it is a very small place.  We were the only ones there at the time ... and we weren't upset at all, just trying to be understood.)  Anyway, the cook was like, "oh, oh, ok!"  He seemed to get it.  We were happy.  He disappeared into the kitchen with Greg's plate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When he came back out a few minutes later, the meat was inside the bread, just like the rest of ours.  However, we quickly noticed that the plate was empty and hanging out of his sandwich was EVERYTHING from the plate.  Cucumbers ... tomatoes and lettuce ... AND FRENCH FRIES.  We waited until the cook was gone before we just cracked up!!!  And we've laughed about it ever since!  I'm just sorry I didn't have my camera to take a picture of this very interesting concoction ... which, by the way, my husband DID consume!!! In fact, it often does.  And although I can't tell you the name, I can share with you why this person ... someone I never had the opportunity to meet face-to-face ... made such a lasting impact.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was Greg's first week of work as an Army Chaplain.  He had just joined us in Richmond Hill, GA after being away for 3 months of training.  He had also just received word that he would be deployed to Afghanistan in just 8 weeks, 3 of which would be spent on the "field" in training. To say the least, we were reeling.  Desperately trying to deal with the overwhelming emotion. Those were some incredibly difficult days.  And then, I heard her name.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Greg got a call one evening that one of his soldiers, deployed with a Military Police unit to Iraq, had been killed in a roadside attack.  She was young. A newlywed. And it was his responsibility to do the death notification.  He had to knock on a door and tell a young guy that his bride would not return home to him.  My heart broke for the husband ... and for my husband, too.  I thought about this girl and the sacrifice she had made for her country. It was like something out of a war movie -- except that is was real.  And we were in the middle of it.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That week was like a fog to me.  While trying my hardest to keep my morale up for the sake of my husband and children, I really wanted to just stay in bed. Greg did an amazing job.  His training and genuine love and compassion for people came shining through.  He ministered more than was required to the young widower and to the girl's hurting family.  I helped him prepare what he would say at her memorial service and I remember how painful it was for me to type each word.  When the day of the memorial service finally arrived, I was mentally exhausted and physically sick.  Now, looking back, I think it was God's grace that I had a tremendous cold and no babysitter for Shane on that morning.  I don't think it would have done a bit of good to see the emotionally fragile Chaplain's wife weeping uncontrollably at the memorial service.  It was hard enough to listen to Greg recount the details!  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today, nearly 3 years later, it is still difficult to think back to the events of that week.  Just days after the memorial service, Greg left for his field training.  Not long after that, he was gone for 15 months to Afghanistan.  I also know, looking back, that what happened in those first few days really impacted our ministry.  Today, Greg is more respected by other soldiers because he has "been there, done that." We are both more sympathetic to the hurts and pains of soldiers and their family members.  Sadly, there were more memorial services for Greg while he was in Afghanistan.  And many opportunities to counsel with soldiers who were dealing with heartbreak, depression, even thoughts of suicide.  Today, as I remember the name of the brave soldier who died in our first week of service as an Army Chaplain, I can also say I am thankful for what God took us through ... and how He did not leave us alone to suffer.  We are more equipped to serve Him, and more assured of His constant presence and love. In spite of the fact that you live in the "real world" ... where people are three dimensional and don't have fairy godmothers with magic wands, you want to believe in Cinderella's happily "ever after." It's just the way little girls' minds work!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But today, I can truly say, my marriage to Greg McVey ... with all its imperfections and "real life" ups and downs has been more incredible than anything I could have ever imagined!  What an adventure we have been on!  During those down times, I have learned that the man I love is steadfast and faithful.  He doesn't quit.  He doesn't even doubt. I have never been disappointed by the way he has handled adversity.  His strength rubs off on me and on our kids.  We are a much more secure family because of his strength of character and reliance on the Lord.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And when we were seperated for 15 months? I learned the man I love is worthy of my trust.  I fell asleep every night knowing he was thinking of me and our children.  His commitment to the Lord, to our marriage and family gave me the courage to keep on going.  It cemented the bond between us like nothing else ever has.  We learned to communicate more openly, weigh our responses to one another more carefully, and to never take one another for granted.  I see him differently than I did before he left us for a time.  Even though we were a part, we were still one.  We were still able to move forward.  The way he talked to me, encouraged me and let me know he loved me made his return that much more special ... a feeling that continues even today.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After 10 years of marriage, there is still no one I would rather be with than my husband!  He makes me laugh like no one else can.  I still can't wait for him to get home at the end of the work day ... and his smile still melts my heart.  Sounds a little like Cinderalla and her Prince Charming, after all! Thank you, Greg for being the most amazing husband and father!  What a life you have given me ... I would follow you ANYWHERE!!!!! Our family vacation was laid back and fun.  We toured some very interesting spots and ate some GREAT food!  I thought instead of writing a long, drawn out blog, I would just do some “snippets” (believe me, this IS a word!) from our trip:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Our drive was so gorgeous!  We started out in spring-like Germany and within a couple of hours passed into the Austrian Alps, complete with snow-capped mountains.  I took pictures out the window, but there is just no way my little sony digital camera did justice to God’s magnificent creation. &lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;The weather was fantastic, warm and sunny with a gentle breeze.  We stayed in Tuscany, near Florence in a very small, country town.  Beautiful rolling hills and farm land.  We got our fill of the city when we visited Venice, Florence and Siena (our favorite).&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Shane loved all the farm animals!  We opened the windows of the car once to watch some sheep.  When we started to drive a way, Shane looked a me with a face of sheer joy and wonder and said, "Sheep talk me."  Those sheep were talking just to him!&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;The artwork in Florence was almost more than 6-year old Lexi could take!  We saw a replica of the Michelangelo "David" ... and Lexi said, "Where is his underwear????" She was shocked.&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;We ate Gelato every day.  YUMMY!  We also had a lot of pizza and pasta... but the ice cream was the BEST.  The kids always went for chocolate, but Mommy and Daddy tried lots of different kinds ... coconut (my personal fav.), pistachio, tirimisu, white chocolate. Those of you who know how much I LOVE ice cream can imagine how hard it was for me not to eat more than one scoop a day!&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Without even thinking, we drove our mini-van into Florence BIG MISTAKE!  It was like New York City ... with more traffic, and the craziest drivers I have ever seen.  Plus, the mopeds, bikes and motorcycles outnumbered the vehicles ... and they ruled the road!  It was a REALLY stressful few minutes while we searched for a parking garage.  (And don't forget -- we couldn't even read the roadsigns)  Don't think Greg will ever drive into Florence again.&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;LOVED Siena!  It was our favorite spot.  Laid back and beautiful.  Lots of great art and architecture.  We started out and ended at Il Campo, the main city square, filled with restaurants and pizzerias. At the end of the day, we just sat and watched people.  It was awesome.  Best part for Shane: after a week of asking for chicken (meaning, nuggets), we found a McDonalds for him and he got his McNuggetts.  Ashley was thrilled we finally found the "Italian McDonalds" ... that made me laugh.  Nothing but pure United States there!&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;Venice was very interesting, with all the water and "water traffic."  We took a bus from our hotel and then a Valparetto (water taxi) to San Marco square.  What an interesting way to live!  The kids were in awe of the marketplace ... and especially the fact that the vendors dummped their leftover fresh fish right onto the ground for the seagulls and pigeons.  What a smell!&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm going to stop, for now ... and post some pics.  This might not be the last blog about our trip! We found a great McDonalds with a play area ... and a full cafe inside. It was actually called "McCafe" instead of McDonalds.  Then, Shane opened his gifts ... mostly various sizes of "bojas" (bull dozers) and new spring clothes.  What a fun evening!  We are so blessed with this little guy.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On Saturday evening, Greg escorted the girls to the "Me and My Guy" International Ball (a Girl Scout event). They had such a good time!  They were able to finally wear the handmade dresses Greg got them in Afghanistan.  They did some line dancing and the "funky chicken" ... and learned to waltz.  Greg said Ashley really "got down" when they did the Macarana (I have no idea how to spell that!).  When they got home, the girls were full of smiles and stories. For the first time since winter began, we had an "unseasonably warm" day.  It was near 60 and the sun was shining.  Ashley had been sick all weekend, so as soon as we hit the 24-hour mark since her fever had broken, we grabbed light jackets and headed outside.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kids were everywhere, moms and dads had gathered to talk ... people were even breaking out the grills! What a day.  We played outside until the kids were ready to drop ... and until we saw Greg's red car coming around the bend.  He had been away all week, so we ran to greet him.  A perfect ending to a perfect day!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sidenote: Today, it rained all day and was quite dreary.  However, the day was not a total loss!  Shane looked me straight in the eyes today and with a smile that would melt any mother's heart told me I was cute! Our blender was out on the counter for Greg's protein shake last night, and Shane was curious! So, I pulled my kitchen step up to the counter and he helped me pour the milk, toss in the bananas ... and push the "on" button.  His eyes were huge as he watched our masterpiece go round and round. He was so proud to drink his shake!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Altogether, the "event" took no more than 10 minutes, and that includes watching Shane drink his creamy shake with a straw, until the last drop was gone.  But what a little spirit-lifter it was for me and for my son!  Precious time together.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately, I have let some other "precious moments" with my children pass me by ... as I fretted about getting housework done, or finishing my work.  But lately, the Lord has gently reminded me to pay attention, create memories -- and ensure my most-loved possessions that they are indeed loved and treasured. So, I'm building lego tunnels with Shane ... sounding out and reading countless three-letter words with Alexis ... gluing and coloring pictures with Ashley -- AND having my hair done on occassion by all three. WOW! But she wasn't done, she went on ..."And He put His hand on me, and the pain went away."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've thought about it several times. She is 7. Her faith is pretty brand new. She is learning scripture and Bible Stories. We talk a lot about character ... forgiveness ... and salvation in our house. But what she said -- sounds like a real EXPERIENCE to me. Could it be that during the night, she literally felt the hands of the Lord?? I believe God and have felt His presence many times in my life. But to see it happening in the life of my precious little girl is phenomenal to me. My prayer is that she will never forget the "hand of the Lord."  As a child, the "things" of God are easier to accept. Our faith is more pure and we don't need as much hard proof. It is why we pray daily for the faith of our children to grow. It is why our responsibility as parents is to live a life that shows them Jesus every day. But I just can't help but share how thankful I am to know Jesus and to have Him in my life, calling the shots. Why am I thinking that right now, in the middle of my day on January 14? Well ...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our computer died. It was a long, slow death that basically began the minute we purchased it two years ago. Three times it has completely crashed, and Hewlett Packard has replaced the hard drive. This time, they wouldn't do it for free. And I refuse to put another cent into a machine that has caused me so much grief over the last few years. Done.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, right after Christmas ... we had to buy a computer. It was not a joyous event, like "Hey, I got something new and fun to play with." It felt more like, "Ugh, we have to do this ... when we really can't afford to do it." Now, in the grand scheme of life, my new computer is not a BAD thing. We dug into a Savings account and purchased what we needed. However, combined with some other move-related unexpected expenses, we don't feel as good about some of our options for the spring and summer now. Especially heading home to the states. A very expensive proposition. We were talking about it last night, and just couldn't come to a decision about what to do. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I want to go home. A couple of weeks to see our families is definitely important to me. Our lives have been so crazy for the last few years, we've not had the opportunities to connect with everyone.  And Greg and I are both close to our families. In fact, we're both close to each other's families. So, I want to go home.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today, with no clear direction, and no miraculous deposit of travel money into our checking account, I am giving this issue to the Lord. Because I trust Him. Because I know HE cares about the things I care about. And because I know HE knows what we need. I'm just not going to worry about it. I'm just going to BELIEVE GOD.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is why it is so cool to love the Lord. Yikes!!! My New Year's resolution ... more blogging! Maybe I shouldn't call this a resolution, just do my best to do a better job at updating our friends and family on life in Germany.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, let's see ... Christmas was GREAT! We had lots of family time and definitely a much-needed "change of pace."  Santa brought us a Wii.  WHAT FUN! Definitely the best gift of the year, hands down! It was funny because one of my gifts from my AMAZING and thoughtful husband was a massage a few days after Christmas. She noticed a knot in my right shoulder and was asking me about it. I was so embarrassed to say, "Well, we got Wii for Christmas and I've been playing some tennis ..." She just laughed. She'd heard it before!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Germany loves fireworks, so New Year's Eve was an experience! Because of the age of our kids and the extreme COLD here, we didn't go out "on the town" ... just watched out the window at midnight. Unfortunately, Ashley and Lexi fell asleep at 11:20 pm and didn't even move when all the noise started. But Shane popped out of his room right at 12 ... ready to see some "pireworks."  Awesome!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, with the holidays behind us, we are looking forward to what the new year will bring! I will be teaching the "Enhancing Your Marriage" Bible Study for the ladies' group here, starting next week and I'm really looking forward to it.  We have also planned our first real trip and will be going to Berlin at the end of next week. It is about a 5 hour drive and we'll be staying in a German apartment. I'm sure it is going to be quite an experience and I'll definitely post pics!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm posting the picture of Miss Alexis, because she lost her tooth!!! The prayer of the McVey family is that you, our family and friends, will seek His face and experience His JOY in 2009.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And now, the 2008 update …&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Greg is home!!! On February 15, Greg returned from Afghanistan. It was still dark when we gathered outside for an early morning “Welcome Home” ceremony and we couldn’t have been more excited! The kids and I were all dressed up with our “I love Daddy” signs waving in the air. (Of course, we were covered in coats, gloves and scarves … and our signs could not be seen through the dark, but we didn’t care!) It was truly a wonderful moment when Greg made his way across the field and into our arms. We remain grateful to the Lord for His protection while Greg was ministering to soldiers in a dangerous war zone. And we are especially blessed God used him to make a difference in many lives. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• We live in Germany now! In June, Greg was offered a position in Stuttgart, Germany that would give him 3 years of stability (no deployment), and he quickly said “YES!” We had exactly 6 weeks to pick up our lives and move internationally. So we hustled! Today, we are settled on Robinson Barracks, a housing area, where Greg serves as the community chaplain. We are enjoying Europe so far … and especially the incredible ministry God has given us. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• The kids are doing great! Ashley (7) and Lexi (6) are enjoying their new school and friends. They are taking a German class and are involved in Girl Scout troops on post. Both of our girls are compassionate and kind to others, always looking out for those in need. What a blessing! Shane (2 ½) is the light of all of our lives. He always has a huge smile on his face and kisses for his family. What a perfect little caboose for our family! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• I was extremely happy to hand over the “daddy duties” to Greg when he got home. Now, just being mom is enough for me! I am honored to be a part of a great group of ladies here who meet weekly for Bible Study. In January, I will begin teaching a marriage-focused Bible study and I’m really looking forward to it. Now that we are settled, I’m also looking forward to “hitting the road” and seeing some of Europe in the New Year. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• Greg stays extremely busy with his new job. It is quite different than what he did at Fort Stewart, with the focus much more on ministry to families as a whole, not just a group of soldiers in a unit. As soon as housing renovations are complete (hopefully this Spring), 300 families will be moving to Robinson Barracks, so we are thankful for this time of relative peace and quiet to prepare and get things started before the “deluge.” At the same time, the needs are great! Many of the families moving here have been through multiple deployments and are searching for guidance on how to put their families back together. There is plenty to keep us busy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is no way to adequately thank you for praying for us while Greg was in Afghanistan! Your care and concern for our family was overwhelming and such an encouragement. We thank the Lord for you ... and ask you to keep us in your prayers as we tackle life in Stuttgart, Germany. Two years ago today. And there is so much I could say! My mind has literally been moving a mile a minute all day long.  Thinking about the experiences we had while Greg was gone. Recounting the stories he told me of his time in a war zone. And especially, thanking the Lord those difficult days are behind us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What I am going to say in this blog however, is simply this, our soldiers are true heroes! It is easy for us to forget a war is going on.  There is so much taking place in America right now -- with the hurting economy, the recent elections, etc -- that the sacrifices being made by men and women of the Armed Forces go unnoticed.  I have to tell you, I think about them all the time. I cry when I read of a successful roadside or suicide bombing. My heart breaks to think of the families I know who have lost a child, husband and father in Iraq or Afghanistan. Because I have been there -- I cannot forget. It is literally impossible for me to put it in the back of my mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I look at my husband, I see a great man of God. An amazing father. The greatest husband. I also see a soldier, and a hero. He was in harms way many a time. He gave up all the comforts of home for more than a year to minister to soldiers "on the field." He traveled week in and week out by helicopter and convoy to get to the small fire bases to hang out with and minister to the soldiers who were living with no electricity or running water. He could have chosen to stay where it was safe, warm and dry. But he didn't. He was a true "boots on the ground" chaplain, and lives were changed for eternity as a result. There is nothing like stepping out of your comfort zone.  Getting alone with the Lord. Laughing with your friends. Talking while drinking coffee. Missing your husband. Getting completely excited and thrilled at the thought of being with your kids again. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And that is what happened to me last week at the PWOC Worship and Study conference. Yes, we had great speakers. Awesome Praise and Worship. Nice accomodations. Good food. But for me, it was all about getting renewed and refreshed. I needed to be reminded of how much God loves me. I needed to complete a thought in my brain without being interrupted by a child. And God was faithful. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And you know what?  Greg did an awesome job here at home!  The kids were dressed and fed (yes, there was great quantities of sugar involved, but that's okay!) The girls' homework was done every evening.  He even kept up with the laundry and attempted to put Lexi's hair into a ponytail every day.  One funny story ... on Saturday, Ashley got herself dressed for the day in an outfit that DID NOT match.  Lots of pinks happening at the same time, and an equal number of opposing patterns.  I simply pointed at it and said, "Ash, this is not working for me honey."  To which she replied, "Well, I wore it one day last week ... and nobody said a word about it!"  I closed my mouth, and let her go. Time with daddy is awesome. No doubt about it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For those of you who prayed for our week, thank you.  The prayers paid off. Two days ago, it was GORGEOUS outside.  Sun shining, birds singing, gentle breeze blowing.  But it didn't last.  While the kids and I played at the playground after school, the clouds rolled in and it got DARK.  Then, the rain started to fall.  We had to run home (Shane LOVED getting wet!)  It rained all night Tuesday and all day yesterday.  Today, it is foggy.  And cold.  Now, I am not complaining.  Well, maybe a little.  It is only in the 30's and everyone tells me this is nothing compared to what is to come.  For me, it is cold enough!  A lot of life in Germany takes place outside, so they have the motto, "There is no such thing as bad weather, just inadequate clothing."  I'm in trouble!  I like it warm and sunny.  Preferably with an ocean nearby. So, right now, before my small witness, Shane and his noisy toy, I am making this declaration, "This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it."  Okay, I feel better.  Now, time to bundle up and head out into the wretched elements for a walk through the vinyards. He is Special Forces, so chances are, their ability to communicate will be very limited.  She shared with me on Monday, as we sat together for prayer, that it is not the fact he will be in harm's way that breaks her heart.  She settled that issue long ago with the Lord, understanding her husband's life is in God's hands. When it is his time to go, he will go, regardless of whether he is in a war zone, or sitting on the couch watching Sunday afternoon football.  Instead, for her, the pain comes just thinking about the absence of his friendship.  The late night conversations ... the laughing together ... the ability to feel close and connected, even when sitting in silence ... the sharing of the parenting. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was hard for me to keep from busting into tears while talking with her!  In fact, I have shed quite a few on behalf of their family.  I know what they are going through!  Living without Greg's daily input in my life and the life of our family was so hard.  Like my friend, I asked the Lord early on in Greg's deployment to take away any fear I might have of losing him.  He answered that prayer. I was able to sleep at night.  The loneliness, however, was a daily struggle.  I remember a time I was able to go shopping at the mall by myself.  Normally, I would have relished that time of peace and quiet ... to try on a pair of pants without having to keep 3 children in line!  But that particular day, the silence was defeaning.  All I could think about was that I was shopping and enjoying a cup of coffee from Starbucks while my husband was in a life-threatening war zone.  My shopping day was cut short.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thankfuly, God was faithful.  When I felt alone, He brought comfort.  Through His Word (&lt;em&gt;For I know the plans I have for you ... to give you a future and a HOPE&lt;/em&gt; ...).  Through the kindness of an amazing church family.  Through the encouragement of a DYNAMIC "inner circle" of friends and family who kept me afloat.  Through my precious, and often hilarious, children.  And through Greg's constant support and love from 9,000 miles away.  (I got flowers and cards, phone calls and emails!!!)  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Was it a difficult 15 months?  YES.  Do I want to do it again?  NO.  However, I learned amazing things about my God, and I am grateful for that.  And, in spite of the distance, Greg and I were able to grow our marriage and learn new things about each other that made us -- as individuals, and as a couple -- stronger.  It is a year I would not take back.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, today, I am praying for peace, strength and courage for my new friends, the Steiningers.  Would you say a prayer for them, too? Okay, it was HUGE for me.  I decided to go to the PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel) fall "Worship and Study" retreat.  No big deal, right?  Well, YES. It is a big ol' deal for me!!!!  I will be gone from Monday to Friday ... which is the longest amount of time I have EVER been away from my kids.  Now, Greg and I have gone a way for long weekends together.  I even traveled to Florida by myself for my friend Nicole's wedding several years ago.  But never 4 nights away.  It is not about Greg being here with the kids alone.  He is an awesome dad.  He is calm under pressure and knows how to take care of things around the house.  He will wash the dishes and clean up after himself and the children (with their help, of course).  That is just who he is.  So, no worries there.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I guess is it just a "mommy" thing!  I am going to miss them all like crazy, and I know it.  Here is why I decided to go anyway: 1.  I think it will be good for me and the kids to miss each other ... we'll appreciate being together ALL the time more when I return!  2. I think it will be good for Greg to see what it is like to be the daddy and the mommy for awhile.  I did it for 15 months.  So, it will just give us something else in common.  I gained a newfound appreciation for HIS role in the home while he was gone ... and I'm sure he will do the same while I am gone.   3.  I think I could use some time to focus on me ... and mostly my relationship with the Lord.  Life has moved so fast the last couple of years!  It will be nice to sit back, relax, think, pray, etc.  I have this feeling God has some GREAT things to say to me ... and I can't wait to have the time to really LISTEN.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, that's the decision I made today.  I'm thankful for the opportunity!  Blessed to have a husband who said, "Yes, you need this, GO!" and looking forward to a few days away!  I'll let ya'll know how it goes. There is so much to talk about.  I could tell you about how our household goods FINALLY arrived (yippee!!!).  Or I could talk about the awesome new Bible Study I am a part of (thank the Lord for Christian "girlfriends").  Or, I could tell you how Greg and I got stuck in traffic coming home from IKEA yesterday and had to call the school to HANG ON to our girls until we got there (we felt so lame).  But I'm not.  Instead, I have to tell you all about my sweet little Shane.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week, I was preparing to go to my Tuesday morning Bible Study, which my 2 1/2 year old son calls "school."  Ran through the regular routine. Got myself ready.  Got Shane dressed.  Prepared his diaper bag and snack.  As we were walking out the door, Shane had a thought and ran back towards the Master bathroom.  He stood by Greg's cabinet, and said, "Daddy." I knew what he wanted.  Hair gel.  I fixed him up, we checked out his "spikes" in the mirror, and left for class.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, this is not really an extraordinary story.  Except for us.  Shane wanted to look like Greg does when he leaves for church.  Hair gel and all.  One year ago, Shane really didn't know his dad.  In fact, until February of this year, Greg was a guy in a picture or on the computer screen.  He knew we always made a big deal about Greg, but I don't think he really understood why.  Now, he knows.  And he couldn't be more in love with his daddy!   &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The day we picked Greg up on post after the homecoming ceremony, Shane wouldn't look his daddy in the eye.  As we drove home, Greg could feel Shane staring at him from the back seat, but when he would turn around, Shane would quickly look away.  We stopped at The Waffle House (yes, sadly, that was our "homecoming meal"), and Shane was blowing the straw paper.  Greg blew it back at him, and the ice was broken.  Someone to play with!  As the days and weeks passed, Shane grew more and more comfortable with Daddy.  Now, he can't wait for Greg to get home.  Greg says, "Shane, are we buddies?"  And Shane always shakes his head yes and with a big smile says, "Bubbies!"  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I remember a lot of moms were kind of sad to "lose" their children to daddy when he got home from Afghanistan or Iraq.  Believe me, I couldn't be happier that Shane adores Greg so much!  (And Ashley and Lexi, well, they were ALWAYS "Daddy's girls!) God certainly had a plan when He designed a family. What a wonderful day! Now, you might be thinking, why in the world would getting a minivan make your day? Well, I too once believed the minivan was the ultimate "mom mobile" ... I wanted no part of it.  But let me tell you, after more than a month of living without it, I couldn't wait for that car to get here!!!  From here on out Shane's feet will not be close enough to Ashley and Lexi to tempt him to kick ... Ashley will not have to sit crooked in her booster so all three seats will fit in the back ... I will be able to haul all three kids, groceries, a stroller, 2 backpacks and whatever else I need without any problem ... I will not have to juggle a 30 pound 2 1/2 year old and a cart full of groceries to get my car keys out and the truck open -- in the pouring rain, I might add (yes, this did happen) and will instead be able to open all doors and the back with the push of a button ... and finally, we are ONE STEP CLOSER to feeling "normal" in Germany!  I guess I am a "minivan mom" after all! However, sometimes it works out to our benefit!!!  Today, we took Ashley, Lexi and Shane to a castle.  The girls literally couldn't wait to get there.  In their minds, it would be like something out of one of their fairy tale books, complete with talking mice and beautiful princesses.  And in the end, except for the mice, mommy and daddy delivered!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We walked through beautiful gardens, as you can see in the pictures, one was decorated completely in pumpkins.  Pretty cool!  The kids even got to roll around in some hay bales.  The best part of the day, however, was when we entered the massive courtyard of the castle.  There, we saw at least 5 bridal parties ... princesses in their flowing wedding gowns -- JUST FOR ASHLEY AND LEXI!  And there, smack dab in the center of the courtyard was a lady dressed for the Venetian Fair (a masquarade thing) down the road.  She was all in black, down to her pointy-toed black shoes.  Her hair was wild with some hot pink streaks ... and she was wearing a black mask (again, for the fair).  Lexi took one look at her, pointed and SHOUTED, "Mommy, THERE'S the WITCH!!!"  Greg and I just laughed. So, here goes!  I never really thought I'd have much of interest to say -- but we live in Germany now!!!  There is just no end to the "newness" we are experiencing on a daily basis.  And, I might add, no end to the craziness, either.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hopefully, our "Great Adventure" blog will help keep our family and friends updated on our life here at Robinson Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany ... plus, give me an opportunity to go back several months, and share with you all a little of how we got through 15 months of separation while Greg served the Lord and our country in Afghanistan.  It has taken me this long to feel like I can write about our time apart with some level of understanding of God's purpose and plan through the entire ordeal.  Time and perspective make a world of difference!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Enjoy, friends!  And come back when you can.
